Bellator 260 video: Bobby King spoils Nick Newell’s return with split decision win

Nick Newell got the returning crowd fired up at Mohegan Sun Arena, but they were left disappointed in the result of a hard fought battle.

Newell faced Bobby King during Friday night’s Bellator 260 preliminary card and ended up on the wrong side of a split decision.

After a striking battle began on the feet for the first 90 seconds, Newell perfectly timed a single leg shot and took King down. The fighters would grapple and clinch against the cage before separating, which led to a fiery exchange in the standup at the end of the round much to the delight of the returning fans.

The kickboxing battle continued on to start the second before Newell pushed King against the fence. King landed an unintentional low knee which temporarily stopped the action before the referee put them back in the same position. Newell landed a hard elbow on the break before King answered with a big shot of his own. Newell began to score with a good mix of strikes and King was happy to return shots of his own, including a big left hand with 30 seconds left. Newell locked in a standing guillotine before King calmly escaped and they exchanged to the bell.

.@NotoriousNewell keeps looking for that guillotine but King has defended well, so far.

King turned up the volume a little more in the third and Newell answered with a mix of strikes and takedown attempts. Newell shot in at the halfway point with a double leg and landed a hard elbow on the break. King answered with a stiff straight right hand before Newell caught a kick and landed an important takedown with just over a minute to go. King returned to his feet in the final 30 seconds and the two fighters swung with all their energy until the final bell.

With the win, King has now won four straight. Newell, on the other hand, has now lost two in a row after having his two-fight winning streak snapped by Manny Muro at Bellator 232. The Connecticut native signed a multi-fight deal with the promotion following his submission win over Corey Browning at Bellator 225.
